The transformation of Entebbe Zoo into the present-day Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) has come along with certain programs, one of which is the Animal Sponsorship Program (ASP).
Under this program, individuals or institutions give donations (usually in cash, though it can be in kind), and specify an animal of their choice that is meant to benefit from this donation. In return, UWEC extends certain benefits to the donor for a period of one year. The benefits and titles accorded to the donors in this program are determined by the amount of money one gives. The lowest stipulated amount is 20'000 Uganda shillings ($10) with no limits on the maximum. Background Animal Sponsorship Program was started in 1997. Prior to this year, all the animal needs (food, medicine etc.) were all met by the Centre's internally generated revenue and the supplementary income from the government and donor agencies. However, the reliability on these sole sources was lacking in some aspects. The continued confiscation of animals from illegal pet traders and the reception of those orphaned by the poachers created one of the problems. The income tended to be constant while the animal number was on the rise. More to this, the income that UWEC generated tended to fluctuate from season to season. (This remains the case). All this compelled UWEC to think of alternative ways of raising money that could help meet the needs of the animals all the year through without any shortcomings. Animal Sponsorship Program was conceived as a better alternative, and was consequently launched in 1997. Objectives Animal Sponsorship Program, like any other program, was designed and launched to achieve certain goals. The primary objective of this program is to raise enough funds that would be used to meet all the needs of the animals at the Centre. With the exception of a few animals at this Centre, food comes at the top of the list of the animals’ needs. The remaining amount goes into other basic needs like medicine, shelter/structure maintenance, etc. |
