Would you like to be a volunteer for UWEC? The centre takes volunteers from all over the world. Volunteers play an important role and their work is very much appreciated. Volunteer terms range from a few weeks to a few months. Areas of volunteering are:

Conservation education, animal husbandry, Marketing, Construction, Marketing and Communications.

Accommodation is available at the centre see below:


Hostel with cooking facilities:

  • Bandas - Double occupancy US $50 per night
  • Bandas - Singe occupancy US $30 per night
  • Serviced apartments - US $40 per room per night

Hotel pickup is charged at US $20.

Our volunteer Programme provides a unique opportunity to work with wildlife including chimpanzees, rhinos, young hand-fed animals, birds, reptiles and other Conservation Education projects like community re-greening, Solid Waste Management, teacher's workshops, student residential trainings, material development, program development,Research, fundraising, guided tours of the centre among others.

As part of this experience, you will live with the staff and help out where required. You can participate in the day-to-day operations of the centre including cleaning of animal holdings, feeding animals, cleaning animal exhibits, among others including relaxation and participating in many sport activities.


If you are interested in working with animals, we have a list of mandatory vaccinations and health checks that are required. These include Hepatitis A and B, meningitis (menomune vaccine, covering A, C, W and Y strains), polio, measles, tetanus, yellow fever and a TB test (done within a period of six months) with a negative result.

This programme has been developed in order to help support the continuing and growing needs of the animals we keep as well as community development. Your involvement in this unique experience contributes greatly to the animals' on-going and long-term care and welfare.

Please send me your CV, a formal application and your particular areas of interest so that we look at the documents and process your application. A letter of recommendation from your institution is also required. You will also need your own insurance cover while at this centre.


For one month, you will be required to pay 1500 US dollars to cater for accomodatation, feeding, airport pick up, trip to one of the islands in Lake Victoria, the largest in Africa among others.
